June 29th was our Kick Off party at La Te Da! We had about 60 people stop in. What a cross section of District 6!
I enjoyed meeting and speaking to everyone. Thank you so much for attending!

51st Annual Convention Florida Voters League
On Saturday, June 27th I had the privilege to MC this fine event. The Keynote Speaker was Congresswoman Carrie Meek, the first African American elected to Congress from Florida since Reconstruction.
What an inspiring speech Congresswoman Meek gave to the group of about 150! I was also inspired by the young children's speeches. What a wonderful future these children will have.
Voices of Praise sang inspirational songs and Vanessa DiGennaro captivated the audience with her beautiful voice and stage presence.
I could not help but take note of the lack of City Officials with the exception of City Commissioner Johnson and County Commissioner DiGenarro. This makes me even more committed to unifying our community.

Wow what fun and what a week. We met so many people and ran out of beads at Angela Street!
It was wonderful to see and feel the support of our friends, visitors and everyone else!

Graduation in Arizona
What a joy to attend my two nieces graduations! One from Jr High and the other from High School. Side bar also a great time to meet up with my entire family.
I am always impressed with my two nieces. They continue to make me proud and I applaud their parents for the sacrifices they made in creating their family and values.
Of note for this blog, the High School graduation had standing room only even in a drizzle to steady rain. The speeches from the senior class were moving, challenging and inspiring considering our current economics. Passion for Country, faith, people of all faiths and languages; brought to mind our 'One Human Family' slogan for the City of Key West.
I can only feel more confident in the youth's of our Country for they are the very future of our Country. Patriotism is not dead, it is cheered and saluted at least at the events I attended.
Our wonderful US of A is founded on we the people. I hope to represent the we the people this October 6.

Francis Street Neighborhood Association
On May 18th I had the privilege to attend the Francis Street Neighborhood Association meeting at the beautiful Vetter home on Francis street.
About 25 people attended this informal gathering of concerned neighbors. A new blog spot will be up any moment now and the talented group will be posting to this site: http://www.francisstreetneighborhood.blogspot.com/.
The issue of the evening was transient rentals. A well put together report was given to the group, part of which is the upcoming May 27th City Commission meeting, 6pm old city hall.
Opinions and ideas were exchanged and a watchful eye is the order of the day.
Security update for the neighbors. There have been a few burglaries in the area, mostly with unlocked doors, etc. Reminders given to lock all doors and windows. Good advice anywhere!

Bahama Village Community Meeting
It is a great thing to see when the Community Meetings (held each month) are attended by residents. This last meeting of May 15 th had about 30 people in attendance. Our City officials were also there to answer questions and concerns.
This is an open meeting - open to the public - I encourage attendance as it is a short meeting and a real chance to share among your neighbors.
The hottest issue discussed was parking. A resident had visitors who parked in front of the home for several days, yet received parking tickets. As I understand from our Police Chief, Mr Lee, there is an ordinance on the books which states any vehicle parked on City streets must be moved every 24 hours. If not, the vehicle is subject to ticket or tow.
The local churches are interested in modifying the parking regulations on Sundays to allow for parking in all spaces near the churches.
The other hot issue was the street master plan. Confused signage, multiple signs on corners, odd one way streets. This was explained to the group that the plan is not yet complete. The visual signage issue will be looked at and perhaps modified.
Speed of vehicles was the last major item discussed. Traffic controls are being considered. Pointed out was the recent accident on Emma and Olivia Streets resulting in the third time this fence has been damaged. Suggestions were concrete plugs or planters.
Look for a new One Stop Program to start in the near future. This program when implemented will directly help youths 14 - 17. A great program from what I heard presented.
